Mistfall Hunter is a dark fantasy extraction ARPG: you descend into corrupted ruins, grab valuable loot, and get out alive — because if you die, you lose everything you carried. This guide walks new Gyldhunters through the extraction loop, the first hour of the game, the best starter class and the habits that keep you alive.
Every run follows the same cycle: scavenge → fight → extract. You enter a map (currently Hallowgrove or Brandrgarde), loot chests, kill monsters and rival Gyldhunters, fill your bags, then find a rare monster called a Returner Woodling. Defeat it to obtain a Soul of Return, which lets you leave the map before the timer ends.
If you die in a run, you drop everything — loot and equipped gear. That is the core tension of the game: cash out early, or gamble on one more high-value area? Most deaths happen to overconfident players who stay too long, so plan your route around an exit from the start.
The opening is a guided tutorial that ends with you falling to the tutorial boss and extracting from the area. From there you arrive at Winds' Rest, the camp hub, where you talk to Dew — the mysterious girl who revived you — and prepare in the warehouse before taking your first real mission.
Your first quest chain (Voice of Prayer) sends you into Hallowgrove: talk to Soekja the white crow at the docks, meet the Woodling Pip near the Verdant Grounds, and investigate a praying follower. You will recover a damaged bell and bring it back to Dew, which starts the main story about the broken Web of Fate.
Need the full quest-by-quest story? See our → complete walkthrough with all 12 main and 9 side quests.
Right after the tutorial, most features are still locked. Complete one solo extraction from Hallowgrove (speak to Pip, then extract) to unlock the friend system — this is also how crossplay parties become available (see our crossplay guide).
If you are new, start with the Mercenary. Multiple outlets (GamesRadar+, GameSpot) call it the most beginner-friendly class: it combines offense, defense and mobility, and its Sword & Shield branch lets you block and perfect-parry while you learn enemy timing. The Blackarrow is the second-best starter — ranged, fast and straightforward, ideal if you prefer kiting over trading blows.
Hold off on Seer (low damage, team-dependent), Shadowstrix (high skill ceiling) and Sorcerer (squishy, complex) until you understand the flow of runs. Full rankings and pros/cons are in our best class guide and tier list.
Your camp (Winds' Rest) is where all progression lives. During the first hours you will unlock, in order:
General rule: upgrade camp production before cosmetics. A bigger Gyldenblod pool and better bags pay for themselves across every future run.
